Some id's not working?

I'm working on the collection of Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe (Q658725) and the provide id's in their metadata. Some work, like for example Jacob Jordaens (Q270658) 00083779, but some don't, for example Eugène Delacroix (Q33477) 10183638 & Jacob van Ruisdael (Q213612) 00117291 don't seem to work. @Marsupium: any idea what is going wrong here? Hello Multichill, it looks like the IDs are truncated (I couldn't find them on http://www.kunsthalle-karlsruhe.de/ though), the correct ones here are:

AKL website has changed and links don't work anymore!

Suggestion for a qualifier with information about the AKL entry size

I noticed, that some (newer) AKL entries are only very small stubs, while the most older entries are long and informative dictionary entries. The normal user, who don't have The Wikipedia Library or institutional access can't see, what kind of entry it is (because of paywall). If someone expects a nice article, creates therefore a pay account at degruyter to get accesss and then just finds a stub, the user experience will be not the best... How to switch this property to the 2022 Artists of the World version?

TL;DR: We should switch to use and link to the new database with updates since 2022, the question is if to use a new property or this one.

Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon Online has been closed in 2022 and continued as Artists of the World (AOW) which has been published since January 17, 2022 and is regularly updated.

The new database has a new interface with a different URL pattern. Links to the property examples in the new database: 40442048, 00099666, 10113072.

Some differences to the old database:

• duplicate entry IDs from Nürnberger Künstlerlexikon (Nuremberg Artists’ Encyclopaedia) in the old database seem to throw a HTTP 404 if they are requested in the new one (example old, example new) and can be found under the same ID like the AKL/Thieme-Becker articles in the old one (example)
• new entries for groups (example) with a new ID pattern
• buttons for machine translation of sections "VITA" and "LIFE AND WORK" into English
• definitions for many occupations via tooltip/click
• "Name Variations" sources in literature via tooltip/click
• "Places of Activity" map using OpenStreetMap data
• linked GND IDs for some entries (example)
• new fields for some entries:
  • "Last edited" (example)
  • "Member of" (example)
  • "Members" (example; clicking "Coellen, Johann von" from there leading to ID 10167252T1 strangely shows the article text for the family instead of the one for the person as opposed to clicking on ID 10167252T1 directly)
  • "Founded"/"Disbanded" (example)
• renamings:
  • "Geographical data" → "Places of Activity"
  • "Date cited" → more precisely either "Active": "From"/"Until" or "First mentioned"/"Last mentioned"
  • "Place cited" → "First place mentioned"/"Last place mentioned"
• breakdown of "Sources" into "Thieme-Becker, Vollmer, and AKL", "Other encyclopedias", "Printed sources" and "Online sources"
• somewhat arbitrary groups of translations of places of birth and death and places cited in the old database are monolingual German in the new one
• removal of redundant occupations? (at least this case: old/new)
• new layout with left-side navigation and two column tabular biographical data
• changed search including instant results, display of date/place of birth/death in results

Given that the new database has richer data for more entries (1,265,393 in comparison to 1,257,613 as of 2024-11-01) and gets updates I think we should switch to use that one.

Following a strict interpretation of Wikidata practices the new database could value a completely new property. However, as far as I can see no substantial information is lost in the new database and most IDs work like before (excluding the (duplicate) IDs for Nürnberger Künstlerlexikon articles). Considering this, I propose to:

1. update the property entity statements, particularly
   1. formatter URL (P1630) to https://aow.degruyter.com/artist/_$1,
   2. format as a regular expression (P1793) to account for new entry categories' IDs like aow.2881144,
   3. correspondingly URL match pattern (P8966), source website for the property (P1896),
   4. switch value of applicable 'stated in' value (P9073) and Wikidata item of this property (P1629) from Artists of the World Online (Q41640909) to Artists of the World (Q130747001)
2. rename the property to "Artists of the World ID" etc., add aliases "AOW ID" etc.
3. add a reason for deprecated rank (P2241) qualifier to the IDs whose URLs throw a HTTP 404 in the new database, maybe with value deprecated identifier value (Q67125514) (or formatter URL not valid with former identifiers (Q111253654)?). I'm afraid that it will not be feasible to find all of them without automation/scraping. The single-value constraint (Q19474404) violations and the entered values for exception to constraint (P2303) show at least part of right away.

As said, the possible alternative I see is to create a new property and to copy the values (that still work, so most) there.

So, I have implemented the changes 1.1, 1.3, 1.4 and 2 proposed above. Implementing 3 will take some time. And I noticed that 1.2 cannot easily be implemented meaningfully, because the new entry categories' IDs like aow.2881144 don't use the leading underscore, thus to make them work all the current values would need to be changed to include it. --Marsupium (talk) 15:08, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
