New to Wikidata? Here are some things I recommend to make your editing experience easier, and which I demonstrate in my training sessions.
You need to be logged in before following these steps:
Sign-up
[edit]Sign up for an account (unless you have one already, of course); at:
or on Wikipedia:
or the equivalent on the Wikipedia in your preferred language. Wikipedia accounts work on Wikidata and vice versa.
When given the option, please enter your email address (it's always hidden, and you can turn off the ability for people to send you messages; but giving an address means you can recover lost passwords). The account name may be pseudonymous, but is personal to the individual, not your job, so "BookLover789" or "LibrarianSam" are OK, but not "StateLibrary", or "ConservationTeam", or suchlike.
If you edit as part of your job, or for any other kind of payment or reward, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation to disclose your employer, but you are allowed to maintain separate accounts for work and personal use, and either or both can be pseudonymous.
It only takes a minute to sign up.
Make sure you bring a note of your username and password if you're coming to a training session or editing event!

[edit]Gadgets
[edit]Optional, for more advanced editing
Under Preferences / Gadgets, activate:
- labelLister
- Descriptions
- Reasonator
- DuplicateReferences
- currentDate
- CoordinateDiffMap
- compact items (Note: This changes the look of the Wikidata interface, so some tutorials, etc., may look different to what you see once it is activated)
Each is described on that page.
Scripts
[edit]Optional, for more advanced editing
Edit Special:Mypage/common.js, and add the line (for example):
importScript( 'User:Daniel Mietchen/scholia.js' );
(you can view the source code at User:Daniel Mietchen/scholia.js).
This adds a link to "Scholia" in the left-hand navigation pane. Other user scripts are available.
On Wikipedia
[edit]Optional, for more advanced editing
If you edit on one or more Wikipedias, or sister projects like Wikispecies, edit meta:Special:Mypage/global.js (check you're logged in first) and add the line:
mw.loader.load("//www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=User:Yair rand/WikidataInfo.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript"); // Backlink: [[d:User:Yair rand/WikidataInfo.js]]
(you can see the source code at User:Yair rand/WikidataInfo.js).
This adds the Wikidata ID, label, description and alias (or a "create item" link, if none exists) below the article title on each project.
