heat treating
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Natural science
Description | Industrial and metalworking processes used to alter the physical, and sometimes chemical, properties of a material. |
---|---|
Represents | heat treatment (Q1458918) |
Data type | Item |
Template parameter | This proprety request is part of the project of creating an infobox for materials. |
Domain | material (Q214609) |
Allowed values | Items that are subclass of Heat treating. Like tempering (Q685487), annealing (Q187360), quenching (Q871335), precipitation hardening (Q779974), Differential heat treatment (Q5275351), case hardening (Q1205902), Cryogenic treatment (Q5190530) and specific items like "T6" (normalized). Maybe long description items like "Quenching in water at 1080°C" that could be reused /or/ we need to add many more properties like "Quenching temperature". |
Example 1 | N690Co (Q3334175) : hardness (P5483) → 285 HB with Heat Treating → annealing (Q187360) [1] |
Example 2 | N690Co (Q3334175) : hardness (P5483) → 60 to 62 HRC with Heat Treating → quenching (Q871335) [2] |
Example 3 | N690Co (Q3334175) : hardness (P5483) → 58 to 60 HRC with Heat Treating → quenching (Q871335) and tempering (Q685487) [3] |

Planned use | Creating an infobox for materials |
Motivation
This proprety request is part of the project of creating an infobox for materials. The work hardening is a necessary qualifier for mechanical propreties of materials : most of metals, some ceramics... This is an important qualifier : most alloys items needs the heat trating to be specified for most properties. This is currently blocking the creation of several steels items. -- Thibdx (talk) 16:02, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Discussion on heat treatments's qualifiers
Several proposal have been made on how to handle the qualifiers. Heat Treating is a very complex subject so that we had to improve readability :
- The proposals have been summarized on a request for comments.
- The previous discussion have been archived here.
