The Wall Street Journal article ID
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Authority control
Motivation
[edit]The Wall Street Journal provides a unique ID for its articles. It can be used to get the article's page by its ID (thourgh the URL: https://wsj.com/articles/<id>), call their article APIs, but more importantly, it can be very helpful on Wikidata to track duplicates.
We're currently using article ID (P2322) for it, but there are some issues with it:
- The current format of the property doesn't allow dashes, so it raises an error when we use it for WSJ article ID.
- There's no constraint of uniqueness on article ID (P2322).
One way we can retrieve it is through the source code of the page: the meta HTML tag article.id in the header of the page has its value. Example: <meta name="article.id" content="WP-WSJ-0000396432">
I will run a script to update all the current articles if the property is approved. Deansfa (talk) 05:14, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
P.S: the examples above are WSJ articles used in Wikipedia articles as references with Template:Bibliographie on the French Wikipedia or with Template:Cite Q on the English Wikipedia
