Motivation
[edit]There are a number of properties that reflect various aspects of causality, described here. However, there are many situations where 'increased by' fits the context better than 'has cause' or 'has immediate cause'. Therefore, I believe an "increased by" property would allow for richer representation of causality on Wikidata. Wmtwmt (talk) 21:08, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

- voter registration (Q1980404) increased by suffrage (Q185387)
- voter registration in the United States (Q55742588) increased by voting rights in the United States (Q405566)
- voter turnout (Q1339847) increased by voter registration (Q1980404)
- Voter turnout in the United States presidential elections (Q3366849) increased by voter registration in the United States (Q55742588)

- Comment These examples seems not all to be universal and/or true. For example, in many countries, you don't register to vote, it is automatic by having the right to vote, so the first one needs to be qualified by jurisdiction. And, I think there is a fair argument that requiring voter registration actually makes it harder to vote, thus lowering the turnout. Ainali (talk) 16:43, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Ainali: For the second point: voter registration (Q1980404) is both the action and the requirement, for some reason. The action would increase turnout, while the requirement would decrease it. Weird. AntisocialRyan (Talk) 18:46, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- I agree that there is complexity to the interactions around voter registration. Nevertheless, I think "increased by" would be a useful property for effectively documenting these interactions. Wmtwmt (talk) 17:11, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
- Ignore my examples then, this is still an important and useful property. wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 23:27, 2 October 2022 (UTC)
