Purpose and Scope

[edit]

The main goal of this project is to upload information about SAAM exhibits to Wikidata, especially those published on SAAM's website. More about why and the utility for this data can be found in this brief report.

By publishing data about SAAM exhibitions to Wikidata, we are creating open linked data about ephemeral events that may not have accessible documentation. Through this process, we are able to connect exhibitions to artists and potentially artworks. This not only provides fuller documentation about artists activities, particularly for lesser known artists, but also expands the potential network of people, places, and themes they and their works are in conversation with. Publishing exhibitions to Wikidata may also show us patterns about GLAMs, since many of these exhibitions showed at multiple locations.

Background and source data

[edit]

SAAM has documentation about over 800 exhibitions. Some of these exhibitions were curated and organized by SAAM and traveled to other museums and may never have been exhibited at SAAM. Some of these exhibitions were curated and organized by other GLAMs and traveled to SAAM (referred to here as "packaged shows").

SAAM internally maintains unpublished lists of all exhibitions, but also publishes some exhibition information to its website, for example, the exhibition New Glass Now. In 2023, SAAM began using database IDs to form resolvable URLs with the goal of using these as an exhibition ID for a new Wikidata property. An example of these URLs: https://americanart.si.edu/collections/search/exhibition?id=4. This Wikidata property has not yet been created because the use of these database IDs to form predictable URLs is relatively new.

Many SAAM exhibitions still remain unpublished within SAAM's website content management system, Drupal. Those unpublished exhibitions were not included in Wikidata because of the lack of a public reference.

How to contribute to this project and Queries

[edit]
  1. Contribute new exhibitions listed on the website to Wikidata, especially once they've ended. Exhibitions can be found here: Alternatively, emaining SAAM exhibitions data could be added to Wikidata even without a public reference point.
  1. Create a Wikidata property for SAAM exhibition IDs following the pattern
https://americanart.si.edu/collections/search/exhibition?id=[exhibit id number]
  1. Model traveling exhibits so there is representation for each iteration of the exhibit at a specific location and for the traveling show as a whole.
