What I Use!
This page is a bit of a wild one, kinda, because it'll record what stuff I'm using on a daily basis, plus my collection of computers and the like.
Phone, TV & Co.
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro smartphone, Aurora Blue (or was it Tropical Green...?); 128 GB internal memory, 64 GB microSD card; running Android 12 w/ MIUI Global 13.0.2 & loads of bloat removed
- Now in the second of a certain kind of blue, rugged-looking-but-just-plastic, no-name phone case w/ ring
- Anker Soundcore Q20i wireless headphones, Blue, w/ active noise cancelling
- Samsung LE46C750R2W 46-inch LCD TV, 1080p & 3D-capable; analog, DVB-C and DVB-T tuner; recording functionality
- Right now mostly used w/ an Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite for watching YouTube, also has ex. an Open Source Scan Converter (i.e. OSSC) hooked up to it
- JVC RX-5032V audio/video receiver and amplifier, silver; FM radio w/ RDS, various digital and analog inputs, surround sound-capable
- Used to be used for FM radio over cable, until my cable provider shut down analog radio broadcasts in early 2024; should get a Bluetooth receiver or something, to stream ex. radio to it from my phone
- Nintendo Switch, HAC-001; used, unpatched & hackable via RCM but not yet hacked
- Hori Split Pad Compact in Gengar design; does not support motion controls, rumble, etc., but is a pretty nice controller (pair?) otherwise
- Original Neon Red and Neon Blue Joy-Cons, came w/ Switch; already had to replace the stick on one of them, second one seems to be going soon, too; semi-retired due to the Split Pad Compact, but might still want to replace them
- Original Switch Pro Controller, bought separately, also used but in good condition
Software
This is specifically related to my main desktop, and it's in no particular order.
- Windows 10 Professional 22H2 ... for better or worse; staying on Windows 10 for as long as I can, plus I could only "upgrade" to 11 on one of my machines anyway
- Mozilla Firefox ESR; I'm not one for sudden changes, so I got into the habit of using the ESR release (Extended Support Release release...?); been using Firefox since it was still called Firebird in version 0.x
- I have to add, tho, that I've not necessarily been happy with the browser's direction in recent years; went as far as hacking together a PowerShell script to apply my all preferred settings on a fresh install; still, it's the best alternative to the Chrom(e|ium) monopoly there is right now
- Also, uBlock Origin for blocking ads; works extremely well and is the only reason I can tolerate using many, many websites anymore
- Mozilla Thunderbird; good e-mail client, also been using this for quite some time, just like Firefox — and also just like Firefox, it's been a bit of a love-hate relationship in recent years
- Notepad++; first used it during an internship, the same in which I first used Windows Vista — one left a great impression, the other did not
- Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.04; the best graphics editor that 2001 had to offer, still running 98% perfectly on modern Windows and capable of everything I need
- No link for this one, because it's technically still commercial software, 20 years old or not — but it's not like it's hard to find online, the Win in the World of the PC might know something...
- IrfanView; an image viewer that doesn't get in the way, once you've tweaked a few settings regarding windows and scaling
- Visual Studio Community; I'm mostly coding in C# using .NET on Windows, so using VS is a no-brainer, recent versions did somewhat break Windows Forms support tho, namely the form designer
- Windows Terminal; such an upgrade over good ol'
cmd.exe
, it's great; does PowerShell, the classic command prompt, Windows Subsystem for Linux, etc. - HashCheck Shell Extension; this integrates checksum calculation into Windows Explorer, adding a checksum tab to the file properties window, and the ability to generate checksum files; also works on multiple files at once
- Alcohol 52% Free Edition; for ripping my PC game CDs and DVDs to disc images; handles many forms of copy protection perfectly as well
- Do note that it comes (maybe used to come, I dunno) with some adware garbage called Smart File Advisor which you cannot uninstall unless you also uninstall Alcohol 52% itself — unless you're disconnected from the internet during all steps of the installation process, but I didn't tell you that
- WinCDEmu; provides virtual optical drives, just like the Daemon Tools of old; very useful also on older machines, if you have HDD space, don't want to swap game CDs/DVDs all the time, and some of your games don't have No-CD patches
- For this one, do note that I recall v4.1 having problems on certain older OS, or something to that effect; you might need to look for v4.0 if it doesn't work on your machine?
- foobar2000; I used to rock Winamp (pun fully intended) well into the Windows 10 days, but eventually switched to using fb2k a few years ago; it's a good audio player, again just something that doesn't really get in the way
- OpenRGB; for controlling my mainboard's RGB stuffs without having to use the manufacturer's software
- HWiNFO64; for keeping an eye on temperatures and the like; not much else to say about this one, you just gotta have some sort of system information tool on your machine!
- HxD Hex Editor; a pretty good hex editor, about the only thing I'm missing is reading Japanese Shift-JIS text right in the editor, tho to be fair, I used to force Hex Workshop 4.x to do that using AppLocale
- CrystalDiskInfo and CrystalDiskMark; being aware of your drives' health is important, and knowing how fast they can go isn't bad, either
- K-Lite Codec Pack; it does what it needs to, and I'm kinda attached to Media Player Classic/MPC-HC/whatever specific (re)incarnation of it is in the pack
- VLC Media Player; despite K-Lite and MPC, having another capable player around can be helpful; also very good at playing network streams and such
- qBittorrent; again, something that just doesn't get in the way, this one obviously being a BitTorrent client
- Winaero Tweaker; every reinstall of Windows 10 requires tweaking certain settings, disabling a bunch of unwanted crap, uninstalling garbage, and so on, and this tool is a good helper for that
