Police said Tuesday that based on a preliminary probe into the death of a teenager during a fitness test at an Espoo school last week, they will not conduct any further investigations into the case.
“No factors emerged that would give [us] any reason to begin a forensic investigation to determine the cause of death,” said Detective Inspector Teemu Värtinen of the Länsi-Uusimaa police department.
Yle reported on Sunday that the Tiistilä comprehensive school student was completing the Move fitness test recommended by education authorities last Thursday. One exercise running back and forth over a 20-metre distance at increasing speeds. However early on the teen was forced to drop out and moved to another location with the teacher.
The youngster was taken to an Espoo hospital for treatment, but died later on. On Monday, the National Agency for Education and the city of Espoo said that the school had acted in accordance with established guidelines and had done nothing wrong.
Police said that they agree with the assessment.
“If there was any suspicion that the school was guilty of something, then we would investigate it,” Värtinen said.
On Monday, school districts in Turku and Salo announced they would suspend similar tests at local schools until a thorough probe into the Espoo case is completed. School officials in Imatra put the tests on hold on Monday, but resumed the activity on Tuesday.
