Oulu court remands man for aggravated rape of 17-year-old

A sex crime case dating back nearly two years is the latest to be revealed involving a minor in the northern Finnish city of Oulu.

Oulu District Court on Wednesday remanded a 20-year-old man in custody on suspicion of the aggravated rape of a 17-year-old girl. The suspect, a foreign citizen, denies the allegation.

Police say the assault took place in a private home in Oulu. According to the tabloid Ilta-Sanomat, it occured in mid-April 2017.

At the request of Detective Superintendent Markus Kiiskinen, the case was heard behind closed doors.

According to Ilta-Sanomat and local newspaper Kaleva, the man, born in 1998, took part in the hearing via video link from a holding cell at Haukipudas police station with the assistance of an interpretor.

The court ordered all documents related to the court proceedings to be sealed. Police say they will not release any more information about the case while proceedings are underway.
