Overseas travel to Finland shrank by a significant 87 percent between April and June compared to the same period one year ago, according to new data from Statistics Finland.
At the same time travel from Finland abroad collapsed by 93 percent during the second quarter against last year, the agency noted.
The decline in the value of tourism exports and imports in 2020 compared to 2019 further highlighted the impact of the coronavirus crisis on the Finnish tourism industry and the wider economy.
According to Statistics Finland, tourism imports and exports in the second quarter amounted to slightly less than 100 million euros. During the corresponding period in 2019, tourism exports (travel to Finland) were valued at 700 million euros, while imports (travel from Finland) reached 1.3 billion euros.
The agency said that the weak performance of the travel and transport sectors contributed to an overall contraction in service exports, which fell 28 percent year-on-year. Exports of goods meanwhile shrank by 12 percent.
The new data indicate an 18-percent or just over four-billion-euro decrease in exports of goods and services combined between April and June compared to the previous year.
During the second quarter of last year, service exports were valued at 7.9 billion euros, while exports of goods amounted to 15.8 billion euros. This year, exports during the same period totalled 13.8 billion euros in the case of goods and 5.7 billion euros for services.
