Motorists are unlikely to have to deal with congestion on the nation's roads and highways this holiday season.
Police do, however, expect road traffic to start increasing on Friday 18 December and be at its highest levels over the holiday season on Christmas Eve, the 24th and again immediately after Christmas Day, on the afternoon of the 26th, with roads being busier than usual once again on Sunday the 27th.
Over the holiday period, police will be carrying out upgraded speed checks and keeping a closer eye on overtaking and assured safe distancing in traffic. In addition, the full system of automated traffic cameras will be in use.
Police are reminding the public that because of the current state of the coronavirus epidemic it is recommended that non-essential travel be avoid nationwide, even during the Christmas holidays.
