MP and Helsinki City Councillor Juhana Vartiainen (NCP) has been confirmed as the National Coalition Party's candidate for mayor in Helsinki.
As the largest single party in Helsinki at present, the NCP controls the office of mayor.
Vartiainen is a second term member of Parliament and chair of Parliament's Finance Committee. He has said that if he is elected mayor following the next municipal elections, he will submit his resignation to Parliament.
At the start of the month, the NCP suddenly found itself without a candidate when, in a surprise move, the former nominee Kirsi Piha announced that she had withdrawn her candidacy.
Piha revealed her decision via a blog post in which she expressed doubts over her ability to represent as mayor the "full spectrum of values" within the party.
