In 2009, rent prices shot up by four percent on average. Last year, private sector rents increased by 2.6 percent across the country, while state-subsidised housing became 2.8 percent more expensive.

However, in Jyväskyla private sector rents soared up by 4.7 percent, while in Lahti the figure stood at 4.4 percent.

In Helsinki, residents now need to pay 2.6 percent more for private sector rentals. In the neighbouring Espoo, the growth was higher—3.3 percent, while rents in Vantaa rose by 0.6 percent only.

Conversely, in Kuopio renting became 1.0 percent cheaper.

The average private sector rent for a square metre amounted to 10.40 euros throughout Finland. For state-subsidised rentals, the same figure was 9.28 euros.

The figures were based on about 242,000 rental dwellings.
