Powerful winds brought down electric lines in different parts of Finland early Wednesday. Thousands of homes were left without electricity in Eastern Finland. The fast catamaran vessels operating between Helsinki and the Estonian capital Tallinn cancelled their services on Wednesday because of winds blowing at up to 21 metres a second.

Wind damage was worst in the Northeastern Savo, where more than 5,000 homes lost their electricity supply.
In the Kainuu region trees falling on power lines cut electricity to 1,500 households.
Winds in the Tapiola and Leppävaara neighbourhoods in Espoo blew down trees and toppled power lines.
In Tapiola, a tree 25 metres high fell on a section of a row house, causing abut ten thousand euros in damage.
