Storm winds at sea have again raised sea levels in and around the southwestern port city of Turku by more than a metre over normal.
On Thursday morning ramps were set up at Turku harbour so that ship passengers could get ashore safely. Floodwaters closed Route 40 between Raisio and Naantali.
Water levels also rose in Kemi, Vaasa and other west-coast towns. In Helsinki, authorities were preparing on Thursday afternoon for levels to rise. However meteorologists do not expect a repeat of last weekend's record levels.
In the seaside neighbourhood of Marjaniemi, sandbagging and other efforts were underway to protect about 20 houses from further water damage. By midday, the water level was 91 cm above normal.
The winter weather has already wreaked havoc in Sweden and Norway over the past few days.
Record-Breaking Weekend
On Sunday all tracking stations on the Gulf of Finland measured record highs. In Hamina the water was almost two metres above average, while Helsinki and Turku were at 151 and 130 cm respectively.
In Sweden, many people had to evacuate their homes because they were stranded by surrounding water. Over 100,000 households are still without electricity and telephone lines are down after the last week's storm. Severe gusts have already caused major road traffic disruption and caused damage to electricity lines.
Meteorologists say the rain is expected to stop at least for a few days - but more rain is on its way in the beginning of next week.
