Call to Overturn Conviction on False Marriage

Finland's Deputy Chancellor of Justice Jaakko Jonkka has called on the Supreme Court to overturn a conviction involving a marriage between Finns and Russian citizens. Kotka District Court found that a number of couples had married for the sole reason of getting the Russian partner a residence permit in Finland.

The Court recently sentenced a number of such couples to four month suspended sentences for making false entries in a registry.

According to the court decision, the couples sought economic or other benefits through fraudulent marriages.

In the view of the Deputy Chancellor of Justice, the people were convicted for an act which has not been criminalised in Finland. As Jonkka sees it, Finnish law does not make a distinction between real and false marriages.
