Disaster Deaths Confirmed

Finnish officials have now confirmed that 178 Finnish citizens lost their lives in the southeast Asian disaster. So far 90 of the victims have been identified and the remains of 85 have been returned to Finland. Another 88 Finns are still missing.

This first list of the missing issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation at the end of December contained 233 names. The CBI has declined to speculate about how many of the missing may still be found and identified.

Most of the victims so far identified are adults who were identified through dental records. The identification of children will take longer as it will mainly rely on DNA testing.

Officials say that the 25 Finnish experts taking part in the work of teams identifying victims in Thailand will continue their work in southeast Asia until at least the summer months.
