Ice Dangerously Thin

Mild spring weather has rapidly weakened the ice cover on the lakes and coastal areas. At the same time, the bright, sunny weather has prompted many people out on the ice.

On all sea areas, the ice is much thinner than usual for this time of the year. This is mainly because it froze over unseasonably late.

People should particularly beware of ice near bridges or where there is an underwater current.

On Sunday a woman drowned in Pori when she skied onto a weak patch of ice under a bridge.

The coast guard says that in the southwest archipelago winds have forced open wide cracks in the ice.
