Archbishop Opposes IVF Treatment for Single Women

Finland's Lutheran Archbishop Jukka Paarma says that single women and lesbian couples should not have the right to fertility treatment.

Speaking in Turku at a Synod of the Evangelical Luthern Church, Archbishop Paarma rejected the notion that childbearing was a subjective right or even human right, as some people claim.

The Archbishop stressed that the focus should always be on the child's rights when considering IVF treatment. In his opinion these include the right to a mother and a father.

He also made it clear that he did not condemn fertility treatment, calling it a blessing for many married couples.
