Fewer But Bigger Farms

Finnish livestock and poultry farms are expected to nearly double in size within the next seven years. At the same time, about half of all farms will go out of business.

The Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners estimates that the number of farms will fall from the current 70,000 to 40,000.

As farms disappear, remaining ones will have to expand to stay viable. This is part of an ongoing transition within the farming sector that was put in motion by Finnish membership of the European Union.

For example, when Finland joined the EU there were less than a dozen farms in the country with over 1,000 chickens; now there are nearly 80 such farms.

Experts fear that the growth in farm size will further alienate people from the countryside and in the long run have an impact on Finns' values.
