More Souvenir WWII Explosives Recovered

World War Two explosives are increasingly being brought to the attention of Finnish authorities. Most of these are souvenirs in people's homes.

The newspaper Keskisuomalainen reports that the Defence Forces have already been called out 143 times this year to remove explosives. Most of these are mines or grenades which have been rendered harmless and collected by war veterans.

In most cases, the veterans' next of kin contacts the army when they can't think of how else to safely get rid of inherited munitions.

The fear is that children could find the explosives and set them off accidentally. Demolition experts remind people that old explosives should never be touched if discovered, but the army should be contacted immediately.
