Culture Minister Defends Draft Copyright Law

Minister of Culture Tanja Karpela opposes calls to change the Government's proposal for a new law on copyrights. Karpela appeared before the Parliamentary Grand Committee on Friday. Fears have been expressed that as it is now written, the bill could excessively restrict the copying of music for personal use.

Karpela told the committee that consumers need not be concerned, noting that only about one percent of CDs are copy-protected in such a way that making personal copies of them on an MP-3 player, for instance, would be illegal.

The committee decided to resume discussion on the matter next week.
