Military Bans Use of Mortars

The Finnish Defence Forces have suspended the use of all mortars following a fatal accident in Rovajärvi on Friday.

The Defence Forces plan to reassess mortar training procedures and live-fire exercises to ensure the safety of participants.

The ban applies to both heavy and light mortars and was immediately in evidence at an exercise on Tuesday in eastern Finland, where mortar exercises had been cancelled.

The military said it was still open how long the ban would last.

According to the Accident Investigation Board, a large piece from the barrel of the heavy mortar that exploded was found at the accident site. It says the new evidence will help determine the cause of the accident.

The site of the accident in Rovajärvi has been carefully combed for pieces of the mortar barrel and round. Most of the barrel has been recovered, but only small pieces of the round have been found.

The Accident Investigation Board predicts that its enquiry will take several months.

One conscript died and six others were injured -- three seriously -- when a round exploded in the barrel of a 120 mm mortar during a live-fire exercise.

During the exercise, conscripts are required to shoot off up to ten rounds a minute. One possible cause of the accident could be double loading.

All seven victims were from the Turku and Pori regions, and were part of the same unit in the Pori brigade.

President Tarja Halonen has expressed her condolences to the families of the victims.
