More Power Cuts as Blackout-Plagued Year Closes

Hundreds of households remained without electricity late Tuesday in the south-central Pirkanmaa region. There have been an exceptional number of blackouts this year, reports one of Finland's biggest power utilities.

Four to five thousand homes there and in Häme lost power over the Christmas weekend as heavy snow knocked trees onto high-tension wires.

Most are customers of the Vattenfall company, which is owned by the Swedish state.

The utility reports that this has been a very bad year for blackouts in its areas in Finland, with four or five major storms. Meanwhile its competitor Fortum reports a more or less normal year.

Both firms have more than 60,000 kilometres of electric lines, enough to go around the world one and a half times.
