More Financial Support for Small Businesses?

The state secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Raimo Sailas, has proposed financial support for small businesses in regions affected by population loss.

Under the proposal, a business could receive funds to support hiring its first employee. The plan would cost about one million euros annually.

The proposal would allocate support to the regions of Kehys-Kainuu, Tornionlaakso, East Lapland and Pielinen-Karjala from the years 2007 through 2011. According to Statistics Finland, these regions will lose relatively the most number of citizens by 2020.

Minister of Regional and Municipal Affairs Hannes Manninen has already announced his support for the plan. Manninen says that the threshold for paying the first employee is the largest financially and mentally to overcome.
