Prison Guards Stage Job Action to Protest Overwork

Guards at all of Finland's prisons began a three-hour work stoppage on Thursday morning. The 2,500 wardens are protesting increases in their workload.

About 150 administrative officials will not participate in the work-to-rule strike.

The corrections staff unions note that the nation's prison population has been growing steadily in recent years, while employees have given more duties without sufficient compensation.

During the job action, prisoners will be kept locked up, and efforts will be made to ensure their safety. Employees will remain at work, but will only handle the minimum duties required by law.
