Luhtanen: More Money for Prisons

Minister of Justice Leena Luhtanen has promised an additional 3.5 million euros for prison administration.

Luhtanen, who met with prison officials, said the additional money will be added to the first supplementary budget. She also said that in the future the money will be used to cover the basic funds of the prison administration.

According to Luhtanen, the Ministry of Justice hopes to reduce the number of prisoners. An amendment, to come into effect in October, is expected to reduce the number of prisoners by over 100.

This will be achieved by, for instance, increasing supervision during parole and community service.

Last week prison employees held a three hour strike in protest of human resource cuts. About 2,500 employees participated in the protest.

Luhtanen said that the current funds are too low, and has promised additional money.
