Porvoo Bishop Devastated but Optimistic

Porvoo’s bishop Erik Vikström says the fire that swept through the historic cathedral is a disaster. Nonetheless he feels confident it can be restored.

"The cathedral is an invaluable local landmark and a national icon. It is held in high value internationally," Vikström says.

He says the fire is devastating but could have been worse. Vikström is grateful that much of the interior seems to have been spared. Nonetheless damage still has to be assessed, and he is particularly worried what the intense heat might have done to the ancient organ.

Porvoo’s mayor also lamented the fire, saying that the cathedral is a symbol of the whole city.

The picturesque stone cathedral, with its medieval painted ceilings and whitewashed pillars was a popular place for summer weddings. These will have to be moved to other locations.
