Officials Can No Longer Read Prisoners' Mail

A new law would forbid prison employees from opening prisoners’ mail without good cause, according to YLE’s Morning TV. The law is being implemented to uphold inmates' basic human rights.

Prison employees say the new law presents a serious security risk. They believe it will now be easier to smuggle money and drugs into prisons. According to officials, prisoners already succeed in smuggling forbidden objects although surveillance is tight.

Currently, all envelopes and packages are searched before being handed over to the inmates.

The new law comes into effect this autumn.
