Lipponen Seen as Possible Doping Agency Chair

Paavo Lipponen, Speaker of the Finnish Parliament and former prime minister, is seen as a possible candidate as chair of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Raija Mattila, an official at the Finnish Ministry of Education who has taken part in the work of the board of WADA, confirmed to YLE TV News that Lipponen's name has been put forward in the search for a new head of the agency.

If Lipponen is chosen, he would replace Canada's Richard Pound, who has led the agency since it was set up about seven years ago.

A new chair for WADA is to be chosen in November 2007. Plans are for Pound's successor to take on the post of vice chairman at the end of this year.

According to a gentlemen's agreement of sorts, the leadership of WADA is to alternate between organisations and national governments. Richard Pound represents the International Olympic Committee.

The European candidate for the post is to be named at a ministerial meeting of the Council of Europe in October. Europe largely covers the funding of the agency.

In addition to Lipponen, possible candidates include former British Prime Minister John Major and Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson. However, Major has turned down the suggestion, while Persson wants to focus on Swedish politics.

Lipponen served as Finland’s prime minister for eight years. He will leave Parliament in March 2007.
