The award was granted in recognition of his development of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and blue lasers.The world's largest technology prize, now being awarded by Finland's Millennium Prize Foundation for the second time, has a value of one million euros.
Shuji Nakamura, 52, presently holds the post of Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Nakamura will receive the Millennium Technology Prize at a ceremony to be held in Helsinki on the 8th of September. The prize is awarded every second year for an innovation that improves the quality of human life and well-being.
