According to the newspaper Savon Sanomat, KELA asked the police to investigate some 1,100 alleged cases of fraud last year.
Over half of the cases involved unemployment benefits. A quarter were related to housing benefits. Other cases included fraudulent claims for student grants, health insurance claims and child allowances. The largest single claim involved a sum of 37,000 euros.
Closer collaboration with police and tax officials have helped to uncover benefit fraud cases. For example, in 2007, the number cases coming to light was up by 40 percent.
Last year, KELA paid out around 11 billion euros in benefits. Cases of fraud amounted to 0.04 percent.
