Minister of Economic Affairs Mauri Pekkarinen says money will be set aside before summer.
"We need more money this spring and the government will make sure the money comes this spring," promised Pekkarinen.
"We can't proclaim dates now when the additional budget will be available. But the government will make sure that allocations will be made so that subsidized employment and education levels stay at the same level as they were at the beginning of the year, in accordance with our previous policy."
He notes that the original budget for 2009 doesn't have enough money set aside for this.
Finance Minister Jyrki Katainen stopped short of promising to free up more money this spring. He said the government hadn't yet made any decisions on a supplementary budget. He says they will first look at using other available funds that the Ministry of Labour already has at its disposal.
Katainen also promised to unveil completely new ways of buttressing employment - methods he says no one has ever tried before.
"We've discussed these ideas with all sides of the labour market and I hope we can make some progress here. They are very flexible programmes which take into account people's needs; completely new ways to address this increase in unemployment," he says.
