Studded Tyres Can Lead To Fines

As spring moves along, police are getting tougher on drivers who have still not replaced their winter studded snow tyres with summer treads.

By law the deadline for removing studded tyres this year was the 20th of April. However, they can be used at any time, if weather conditions require.

Many rental cars still have studded tyres mounted. Although the law applies to all motor vehicles, many rental cars are driven from the south by holidaymakers on their way to Lapland, where road conditions can still be wintery.

Inspector Erkki Alanen of the Tampere police force says that in most cases fines are being issued to drivers still using studded snow tyres. The fines can get quite high, if first warnings are ignored.
