Nurses Stage Demonstration in Helsinki

Members of the Union of Health and Social Care Professionals (Tehy) are staging a demonstration in Helsinki on Monday morning in protest of planned cost-cutting programmes at the Helsinki Hospital District. The union says such measures compromise patient safety.

The hospital is looking to cut 28 million euros this year from its personnel budget. Nurses say savings will be made through furloughs and by forcing workers to trade in holiday bonuses for leave.

The nurses say the cost-cutting exercises reduce the quality of care while threatening patient safety. The union underscores that the hospital district is already short-staffed.

The union has some 10,000 members in the Helsinki Hospital District.
