Police Jurisdiction Laws Undergo Reform

The Finnish police jurisdiction laws are currently undergoing a reform. A Ministry of Justice committee report suggests renewing among other things preliminary investigation procedures, coercive measures and source protection.

The thousand-page long report was handed to Minister of Justice Tuija Brax and Minister of the Interior Anne Holmlund on Wednesday.

The proposed changes to source protection have already been met with some criticism by media, with fears that source protection might be undermined. Under current law, media has the right to protect their sources, unless ruled to disclose the source in court.

The new report suggests a source may be disclosed during a preliminary investigation, in special cases where the original source is likely to have broken his or her previous non-disclosure agreements.
