Kemi Snow Castle construction begins

Kemi’s snow castle is finally being constructed on the northern shore of the Baltic Sea after record warm temperatures delayed building work. The castle is slated to open on 28 January.

According to Jouni Heikkilä, who is in charge of the project, construction has never started this late before. Snow production started on Saturday. The snow is made out of sea water, as normal snow is too soft for the construction work.

Builders are hoping for the predicted cold weather to continue to the end of the week, as they expect to produce enough snow to build the castle in five days. To do so, they will need temperatures to remain at -7 degrees Celsius or below.
