Partial Solar Eclipse Visible on Tuesday

A partial solar eclipse was visible from parts of Finland on Tuesday. The eclipse was at its fullest at 10.50 a.m. when around four-fifths of the solar surface appeared to be hidden behind the moon.

Viewers in south Finland, especially on the coast, theoretically had the best opportunity to glimpse the eclipse, says the Ursa Astronomical Association. However, cloud cover blocked visibility in many areas. In addition, the sun is very low on the horizon at this time of year.

Special darkened welding glasses are recommended to view the eclipse. Under no circumstances should the sun be viewed directly with unprotected lenses or with the naked eye.

Two partial solar eclipses are visible from Finland this year; the next will be in 2015.
