Working Group: Driver’s License Not a Reliable ID

A working group at the Ministry of the Interior proposed on Wednesday that driver’s license should not be used as proof of identity in the future. This would be to combat identity theft.

The working group has stated that a driver’s licence only proves a person’s right to drive and that it is not meant as a document which establishes identity. When a license is granted, identity checks do not always occur. Forging a driver’s license is not particularly difficult.

The group recommends that, instead of a driver’s license, a personal identification card should be used. They would also like to look closer into the issuing procedures of passports and identification cards.

The working group submitted its report to the Minister of the Interior Anne Holmlund on Wednesday.
