Most Finns Opt for Cheaper Prescription Medicines

A majority of Finns give high marks to legislation giving them a choice in prescription medicines. A survey carried out by the University of Eastern Finland shows over 80 percent favour the reform.

Over one-third of Finns have opted for a cheaper generic medicine to the one prescribed by a physician since the law was changed. Savings in medical expenses or a recommendation by a pharmacist are cited as the primary reasons.

Over 60-year-old women, however, prefer to use the actual medicine as prescribed and do not opt for a cheaper alternative.

Over 1,800 people were interviewed for the survey.

Since 2003, pharmacists have been obliged to offer a cheaper alternative to a prescription drug unless specifically prohibited by either the physician or patient.
