Lapland Odyssey Wins Jussi Award

The awards for the best Finnish films of 2010 were presented at the annual Jussi Gala on Sunday evening. Lapland Odyssey (Finnish title Napapiirin Sankarit) , a road movie set in Lapland, won the best film award.

Ville Virtanen won the best actor award for his role in Bad Family (Paha Perhe) , while Katja Küttner took the best actress prize for her part in Princess (Princessa).

Sampo Sarkola won the best supporting actor award for his part in Heartbeats (Kohtaamisia), and Sara Melleri won that for best supporting actress for her part in Run Sister Run (Kohtaamisia).

Steam of Life (Miesten Vuoro), an exploration of the sauna's role in Finnish culture, won the best documentary award.

A total of 14 films were competing for a Jussi Award. Rare Exports, Petri Jokiranta's Christmas-themed action comedy, picked up six of them, including best costume design, best photography, best staging, best score, best edit and best sound design.

The Jussi Awards were first presented in 1944 and are thought to be the oldest in Europe.
