Convicted Footballers to Return to Zambia

Two footballers who took bribes to influence the result of a Veikkausliiga football match in 2010, are to return to their home country, Zambia. They are free to leave as their former club, AC Oulu, will not seek compensation for their actions.

The Oulu District Court last week sentenced the men to seven month suspended prison sentences for taking bribes to ensure their team lost heavily in an away match against TPS Turku.

AC Oulu lost the game 5-0.

Meanwhile, police have completed their preliminary investigation into nine Rovaniemen Palloseura (RoPS) players who are suspected of taking bribes to influence matches.

According to the National Bureau of Investigation's Detective Chief Inspector Jukka Lakkala, there is sufficient evidence to bring prosecutions. The file has now been passed to the prosecutor's office for them to decide on any possible charges.
