Chemical spill in central Joensuu

A spill involving the chemical boron trichloride was reported to have taken place Sunday evening on the Joensuu campus of the University of Eastern Finland.

The building where the spill occured was evacuated and cordoned off. Police advised the public to avoid Yliopistokatu street. The source of the leak was being investigated and the situation was described as "serious".

The chemical was originally reported to be hydrogen bromide, which is corrosive substance that can cause burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes and can be fatal if inhaled.
