Huge compensation in railway arson case

The perpetrator of last summer’s arson attacks near the Rekola station in Vantaa has received a suspended prison sentence of one year. Additionally, the young man has to pay nearly 300,000 euros in damages.

At the time of setting a series of fires on railway equipment near Rekola, the perpetrator was 17 years old.

The act caused rail traffic delays that lasted several days. The perpetrator has been sentenced to pay altogether nearly 300,000 euros in compensation to the Finnish Transport Agency, Finnish State Railways VR and telecommunications company TeliaSonera. Most of this money will go to the Finnish Transport Agency. The initial claims for damages ran to over half a million euros.

The convicted is also to repay about 2,000 euros in legal expenses.
