The proliferation of smartphones has not curbed Finns’ enthusiasm for sending text messages. Some 2.2 billion texts were sent in the first half of this year—an increase of four percent over the same period last year, according to the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA).

Finns on average send two messages per day, according to FICORA. Multimedia messaging is also becoming more popular, with growth of 16 percent over the second half of 2010.
But while messaging continues to gain ground, voice calls have slightly fallen out of favour, with a three-percent drop since last year. The average phone call in Finland lasts three minutes.
