Few SMEs worry about online risks

Small and medium-size enterprises in Finland do not regard the risk of information security incidents to be high in their operations. According to a survey commissioned by the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority FICORA, 60% of the companies that replied estimated their information security risk to be low.

In this survey, carried out in September and October, only 4% of small and medium-size companies considered the risk to be high. The understanding of the overall picture of information security and the level of competence, however, varies among companies. In addition, some companies may not always be aware of potential security threats.

"The data leaks that have occurred during the last weeks have shown that many companies should improve their competence regarding data protection," says Mr. Timo Lehtimäki, Director of Networks and Security at FICORA.

The survey by the pollster Taloustutkimus revealed that companies seek information on security most often online, or turn to information security companies and other partner companies for information. On the other hand, one out of five respondents says that there have been times when they would have needed security information for their work, but did not find what they were looking for.

FICORA begun a project in October with an aim to improve information security knowledge in small and medium-size companies. In all, 440 companies replied to the survey. Each of these companies employ between 5 and 100 employees.
