Museums feel pinch of government spending cuts

Cuts in state spending pose a threat to the country's network of museums. The National Board of Antiquities faces a three million euro cut in annual funding representing 15 percent of its total budget.

If implemented, the Board's Director General, Juhani Kostet, believes as many as half of the museums under its control could be axed in a worst case scenario.

"If current proposed cuts are approved by parliament, it will be impossible to just cut back on all museum operations; some will be forced to close," he says. Consultative talks on staff redundancies start on Monday; a total of 60 job cuts are anticipated.

The National Board of Antiquities controls 16 museums including the birthplaces of national figures to historical manor houses.

Kostet says rises in admission charges are already being planned along with reduced opening hours.

Local government bodies, associations and foundations also face a cut in state grants of five million euros affecting also some 124 museums nationwide. A final government decision is expected before the end of the year.
