Finnish engineering firm Wärtsilä has reached an agreement with the board of the British oil extraction engineering firm Hamworthy to buy the company. The deal will cost Wärtsilä 383 million pounds, or nearly 450 million euros.

The acquisition would value Hamworthy at 825 pence per share. Wärtsilä says that the deal will improve its ability to compete in the offshore oil and gas extraction business.

The purchase will be finalised once Hamworthy shareholders accept the offer. In addition, regulators in Germany and Norway need to approve the purchase, and a decision is expected by the new year.
