Holiday reminders

The Christmas holiday means changes to many services. Most shops and public offices are closed or on short hours from Christmas Eve over the long holiday weekend.

Shops are closed on Christmas Day. On Monday the 26th, smaller food retail outlets are allowed to open their doors for four hours between the hours of 8 AM and 6 PM.

State Alko alcohol retail outlets are closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Banks are closed until Tuesday the 27th.

Post offices are closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with the exception of Helsinki's main post office, which is open Christmas Eve until noon.

Transportation:

There are changes to long-distance bus schedules during the holiday period. Travellers are advised to consult the Matkahuolto travel service for timetables. The timetables of express services are also available on YLE TV teletext, page 440 (in Finnish).

VR rail services are operating to a holiday timetable. Changes over the Christmas period can be found at the VR website.

Operation Lumihiutale (Snowflake) will be offering around-the-clock assistance to motorists in distress. The national road service number is 0200-8080 (call fee of €1.95/ min plus phone operator charges).
