Farmers’ Union Wants More Bio-energy

The Finnish Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners – MTK – is urging the government and Parliament to decide quickly on ways to increase both demand and supply of biologically produced energy. The union proposes increasing investment supports and a price support system for electricity produced by burning wood.

According to the MTK, fast action is needed by the government, because of Finland’s commitment to increase its use of renewable resources of energy from the current 28 percent to 38 percent in the next ten years.

MTK calculates that two thirds of the increase in renewable energy production can be implemented through forest projects.

In addition, field energy, biogas, wind power, and hydroelectric power are all needed. The union emphasised that the increased use of bioenergy does not rule out an increase in the use of nuclear power.
